Frequently Asked Questions

Is it mandatory? No, 6th grade camp is not "Mandatory". However, it is HIGHLY recommended for all students as part of the South Arbor curriculum. We would not go through so much effort to plan it if we did not think it was a crucial part of their education!
Will there be fundraisers? There might be some fundraisers to help cover financial aid, but otherwise, we will NOT be doing large-scale fundraisers. They have not raised as much money the past couple years as hoped, and so we'd rather focus on immediate needs.
Is there privacy in the bathrooms and showers? Yes, there is privacy in the bathrooms and showers. They are not "open showers" nor do students have to walk to outhouses.
What if I have a kid qualify for Cross Country States? The state championship is during camp, and in the past, we have made accommodations for students who had to check out of camp for a while to attend states.
Will students be acting up in the cabins and at camp? NO! We expect a high standard of conduct of our students and chaperones, reflective of South Arbor’s values! The YMCA also emphasizes strong morals.
Are activities dangerous? No - this camp runs camps YEAR ROUND, and has been doing so for many decades. While any activity obviously carries some risk, the environment is quite controlled. In fact, it is a GREAT way to learn about outdoor safety in a safe environment!
What about bugs? We will do tick checks, and kids will be advised to bring insect-repellent.
